I was reading Ursula LeGuin's introduction to her book, "The Left Hand of Darkness." I encountered the following quote and thought I would share it with you since it applies so well to your current interests in sound and text:
"Words can be used thus paradoxically because they have, along with a semiotic usage, a symbolic or metaphoric usage. (They also have a sound -- a fact that linguistic positivists take no interest in. A sentence or paragraph is like a chord or harmonic sequence in music: its meaning may be more clearly understood by the attentive ear, even though it is read in silence, than by the attentive intellect)."
This is from the 1985 edition, ISBN 0-441-47810-7 The introduction is not pagnated.
